On the 1st of May 1707 the newly united parliaments of Scotland and England met for the first time. Following the Treaty of Union the flow of people and goods between the two countries resumed and increased.
There is still a constant flow of people coming to London from Scotland and as we know some have no home and no job. This is the point at which Borderline can help - but we need your help.
In recognition of the 300th Anniversary of the Treaty of Union we are launching the 300 Club. What does this mean? We are looking for 300 people who are willing to support Borderline by a regular monthly payment.
We are looking for:
100 people who will give £10 a month
100 people who will give £25 a month
100 people who will give £50 a month
Borderline is small charity achieving big results
We aim to assist vulnerable Scots in London to establish a secure tenancy and lead a healthy, independent life. At Borderline, backed by the Ministers and congregations of St Columba’s and Crown Court Kirks, we believe that everyone has the right to a decent home at a price they can afford.
Borderline offers a unique service in London, with an understanding of our clients’ particular problems and needs, and strong partnerships and links with many different organisations in both London and Scotland who can help us find the best solution for each individual client.
How Borderline helps
Our advice team helps our clients with:
- Professional housing and benefits advice
- Assessment and referrals to specialist drug and alcohol agencies
- Referrals to resettlement options such as hostels
- Supportive resettlement in Scotland
- Priority access to bed spaces with partner hostels in London
- Planned resettlement into longer-term accommodation
- Subsidised travel to help with resettlement and essential visits
- Subsidised Birth Certificates for proof of identity
- Assistance to approach grant givers for essential items
- Free toiletries and clothing
- Free telephone advice line
By joining our ’300 Club’, you will be making a much-needed contribution to our vital work.
We see on average one new client every working day, from every area of Scotland. If you sign up to giving us £10, £25 or £50 a month, we can help more people like Emma.
Emma came to London from Glasgow, fleeing a violent relationship. She hoped to turn her life around and then bring her children to join her.
Sadly Emma was the victim of a sexual assault in London which shattered her confidence. Falling into depression, she developed a drug addiction and ended up on the streets. Eventually, Emma found a hostel bed and started to get her life back together. She was devastated to then discover that one of her daughters had committed suicide and decided that she needed to return to Glasgow as soon as possible.
Her hostel key worker brought her to Borderline and we’re working to help her go back, but making sure she has the right support in place. We’ve contacted the council, sought advice from housing rights agencies and contacted agencies in Glasgow who will be able to help her. We are working with the Glasgow Association for Mental Health, the Homeless Addiction team and the Shelter Glasgow Families Project.
When Emma is ready, the Families Project will support her bid to be rehoused with her children. Emma is doing well on a methadone programme and with the right support, will realise her dream of being re-united with her children.
